Acetyl L-Carnitine is primarily known as a fat metaboliser, whereby L-Carnitine supplementation has been shown to increase Carnitine Palmitoyltransferase (CPT) levels, which is the enzyme responsible for transporting broken down fatty acids from the blood stream into the mitochondria of the muscle where they can be burned.
Utilising an L-Carnitine supplement may increase the body’s preferential use for fat as energy, leading to a greater amount of fat loss. Furthermore, increasing CPT levels may also enhance the use of fatty acids during exercise, which can delay the breakdown and utilisation of glycogen into glucose, preventing fatigue for longer.
One specific benefit to supplementing with ALCAR however, is the acetyl attachment and its benefits for mood regulation and brain function. With an addition acetyl ester, ALCAR works two-fold by increasing the absorption of L-Carnitine as well as acting as a precursor to the production of choline in the brain, which is known as the learning neurotransmitter.
Supplementing with 2-3g of ALCAR 1-2x daily may increase fat loss, reduce fatigue due to glycogen retention and can also be used to enhance brain function on a daily basis.
